Confession: I am obsessed with Moana right now. I know I am late to the game BUT it is fricken AMAZING.
The soundtrack has literally been on REPEAT for the last 2 weeks. And yesterday I was listening to “How Far I’ll go” and it HIT me like a brick. The message in this song is GOLD and it is now my fav. Don’t know what I am talking about? Let me break it down for you right now…
Here are the Lyrics:
I’ve been staring at the edge of the water
‘Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I cannot go
Where I long to be
See the line where the sky meets the sea
It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know
If I go there’s just no telling how far I’ll go
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh
I know, everybody on this island seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know, everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I’ll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?
See the light as it shines on the sea
It’s blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it’s calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know
What’s beyond that line, will I cross that line?
See the line where the sky meets the sea
It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know, how far I’ll go
I am about to go deep really fast. When we were kids, we were told how we should be in society, how we should act, who we should become. We were taught how to be tame. The verses of the song talks about how we know that there is more out there for us. That we have the potential to be so much more than we are. That life is FULL of opportunities and potential that we don’t explore because we let society tell us who we are supposed to be. Society tells us we all have specific roles and we are meant to stick in within those roles. How we are supposed to be the perfect daughter, sister, wife, friend. How we are supposed to be grateful for our lives and wanting more is selfish and unnecessary. That we can be satisfied here, we can have a good life.
But we aren’t meant to be trapped in these boxes that society put us in. That we long to be so much more. Our potential is UNLIMITED. Where we can go, who can be, there is no end.
Moana is the exact role model our future generations need. We need to teach our daughters and young girls that it is okay to go outside the lines. It is okay to follow where our heart guides us and where our passion leads to. That our true happiness depends on ourselves and NO ONE can tell us who we can be.
There is no telling where we can go if we step outside the norm and become who we are MEANT to become.
